The Fat Lady, clad, as ever, in her pink silk dress, welcomes you to the Gryffindor common room. That is, if you know that the current password is "quidditch", a hopeful reminder that your house has serious ambitions for the quidditch cup this year.
As the portrait swings forward, you are greeted with the welcoming sight of the squashy armchairs, large, blazing fireplace, and round tables as seen through the round opening in the wall.
The notice board bears no important reminders at the present moment, only notes about lost books, a set of found scales, and a notice about the latest meeting of the Gobstones Club.
On the other side of the room, you can see the two staircases leading to the dormitories into the Tower the Gryffindors claimed as their own. The girls' staircase on the left, you know, is enchanted so that no boy can reach the top without it turning into a stone slide, sending him toppling back down. However, the boys' staircase on the right has no such enchantment, a point that has not escaped the notice of several boys who view it as a sexist enchantment.
So far, the only rule specific to the common rooms is that only those in that house may enter, as is laid out by the canon.
