Dear sir or madam,
You are cordially invited to the Burke Manor for fall festivities. We'd like to open our home to all in this time of turmoil to remember what is important to us now, unity. Dress is formal, and all are welcome.
Sincerely,
Caractacus Burke
The invitations had gone out three weeks ago, and Hogwarts had been in an uproar over them, allowing students to go off campus for the first time to attend such a groundbreaking event. To show such hospitality in these times was rare and something which should be greeted with enthusiasm and respect. So, at the headmistress's demand, rules had been bent to allow all the students that wished to attend this possibly historic gathering, if they had parental permission.
Naturally, some had greeted the invitations with distrust and doubt. Surely nothing good could come from this, and hadn't the Burkes always been a bit shady? Could it be true that they'd turn over a new leaf all of a sudden? Unity had never really been their aim. However, not everyone knew all the details. Even some of those that did wanted to convince themselves that change was possible. After all, that's what this time was about--change.
It seemed the only one truly upset about the party was their son, Tavis. He hadn't spoken to his parents since the incident and had no real intention to break the silence now. Being a well-bred son, though, he was forced by honor and pride to attend the party. What happened after that, though, was another matter entirely.
The air carried a noticeable chill now with the solstice only a few days past. The leaves had begun changing a few weeks prior, and it was seeming more and more like fall. The only thing missing had been some good apple cider, Tavis thought as he stared down at the bowl in front of him. He'd arrived a few hours early for the party to help his mother, despite his protests. At least helping his mother meant little more than ordering around a few house elves.
He helped himself to some cider as the doorbell sounded to announce the first guest's arrival. A house elf scurried off to answer it while another finished arranging a platter of cauldron cakes and swept off after the first to take the guest's coat. Tavis, rather apathetically, took a seat at the closest table and sipped his cider looking forward to what he knew would be a lavish and extravagant party filled with boring people, dull chatter, and, if Mehren came, something overly dramatic and somewhat exciting that people would be talking about for years.
