I'm new here. What do I do first?
First, we suggest you read the rules, then the basics of RP on OotARP, the backstory of RP on OotARP, the following FAQs, and, finally, the character registration process. Those should answer all your questions and get you ready to create a character, plot, and RP! Oh, and welcome to Out of the Ashes RP!
What do I do if I need help?
You're already doing the first step. Read the FAQ first and see if you can find an answer to your question here. If not, go to either the questions/comment thread on the general board (if it is a question about the site in general), the questions comments thread on the OOC Discussion board (if it is a question about the plot/RP in general), or the questions/comments thread on the character registration board (if it is a question about creating a character). If you would like, our mods would be happy to answer any questions. Just go to the top of any page and click on your messages to send either fleurdelacour5787 or brae a message with your question. We will get back to you as soon as we can.
Who are these "mods" I keep hearing about?
"Mods" are moderators of the boards that run the site, help create plots, approve characters, abilities, jobs, etc. Right now, our mods are fleurdelacour5787 and Brae.
How many characters can I have?
You may have, as a new member, up to 5 characters. After six months of activity on the site, you will be allowed up to 7 characters. That means you can have up to 7 characters (not profiles), and twins count as two characters. If you are a moderator, these rules do not apply because of the need to help numerous and various plots progress.
What are the different boards for?
The General Board is for any OOC discussion not directly related to RP. You can talk about the movies, analyze the books, talk about current events, or anything else that appeals to you. Please note that the only chat thread that will be allowed is located on this board.
The OOC Discussion board is specifically for plotting purposes. If you have an idea for a plot and need people or feedback for it, post it there. In addition, any group created on this site will have a club thread on this board in which you can find updates, current and upcoming plots, discussion, etc.
The Character Registration board is where you go to create your RP characters, get sorted, get a job, etc. You will post a thread and fill out the application for your age group and wait for approval by a mod before posting with that character.
The New Magic Registration board is where you go to get moderator approval for any new spells, potions, creatures, or artifacts you have created and plan to use in RP before you actually break them out in a thread. This is to avoid godmoding.
The Approved Character board is where all profiles that have been approved are placed by mods after their approval. Students may not post new threads here. They may post changes or updates to their characters, though.
The Hogwarts boards are Classrooms and Hallways, which is for all threads taking place in the castle (and contains the house common room threads), and The Grounds, which is for all threads taking place in the Forbidden Forest as well as on the grounds.
The Wizarding Places board is for any thread not taking place in one of the other named locations.
The remaining boards (Hogsmeade, Diagon Alley, Knockturn Alley, St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, and the Ministry of Magic) are for all threads taking place within their respective location. They might contain stickied threads for certain places within the general location as well.
Why do I have to register so many things (groups, characters, abilities, spells, etc.)?
This is only to keep order on the site. It is to limit the number of special abilities, families, etc. as well as to minimize the opportunity for godmoding by using new spells that no one has ever heard of. It may seem like a pain to go through the process, but it really is beneficial to you as an RPer.
I want to register new magic that does not fit into one of the categories listed (creature, spell, potion, or artifact). What should I do?
PM a mod or choose the category that closest resembles the item you wish to register.
How do I get an customized avatar for my RP character?
As of right now, we have 5 avatars you can choose from for your RP characters (the Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Slytherin, and Gryffindor shields along with a blank avatar. If you wish a picture of your playby to show up when you RP, you can achieve this one of a few ways: 1) Win RPer of the month , 2) Refer a friend to OotARP and inform us, or 3) Become a part of the OotARP staff. If one of these happens, you can choose one avatar for one of your RP characters. The mods will then add it into the code for you to select whenever you RP.
What is this RP Time thing about?
On the main side table, you will see a box called "RP Time" with a date that might not make sense to you. This is the date of our role play time. It is only significant if you wish to start an RP that day. Undoubtedly you'll find RPs ranging in time on the boards based on when they were started. Some might be from summer if they're old enough while others will be from fall, the newer ones.
This does not mean that you must date your RPs or even restrict them to that certain date or day of the week. It is merely a reminder that if you post on a day when the RP time is Tuesday, September 5th, 2000, your character probably won't be wearing snow boots and trudging through a foot of snow on the way to the greenhouses.
If you do wish to have an RP that takes place on a certain date and it's not the one in the side bar, feel free to do so. Keep it around the same time (within a week or so), but don't feel horribly limited by it in that manner. This is merely a tool to make sure we're all on the same page with how long the students have been there, the weather, Hogsmeade weekends, holidays, etc.
