What is RP?
RP stands for role play. Essentially, it is creative writing that truly allows you to step into your character's shoes. You create a character, their backstory, their personality, etc. and you interact with other characters on the boards as they would.
Language of RP
As you move about the boards, you will see certain phrases and acronyms you might not understand. Here, we will attempt to explain the more common ones.
-IC stands for In Character. It means they are referring to how their character would act or asking you to respond as your character would, not yourself as the RPer.
-OOC stands for Out of Character. It means they are responding as they would, not their character. It is often used for messages that don't relate to the thread you are participating in (i.e. "I have to go eat dinner").
-PM stands for Private Message. You can send other members private messages (that also might be referred to as "owls" as this is a Harry Potter site) so that you can communicate about anything without everyone else knowing exactly what you are talking about. To send a PM, go to the top of the page and click on messages.
-RL stands for Real Life. It means they are talking about what's going on offline, not with their characters or their online life.
-NPC stands for non-played character. These are characters that anyone can use, keeping in mind their personalities and background. You can talk to them and whatnot; they add to the scenery so to speak. Use them to set the scene. On OotAPR, these are typically canon characters.
-Private might be a part of thread titles you see around the site. These are typically closed RPs for the main RPer and a few others. There might be a list of rules on who can RP in the first post.
-Semi-Private is another marker for an RP thread. These are usually invitation-only threads or those involving an application to join. Mostly these will be groups like the Order of the Phoenix, Pureblood Club, Hydra, Patronus Club, and the Vigilantes. Some might put semi-private in the title to indicate only those that know their character well may post.
-Open is yet another marker for an RP thread. This means anyone can post, though there may be a short list of rules about length and content in the first post.
-Literate/Lit is another thread marker for RP. It will indicate that this thread expects posts with lengths beyond the minimum length required by OotARP. Chances are, there will be further explanation of their expectations in the first post.
-Godmoding is a term used to refer to an RPer who uses special abilities, powers, artifacts, spells, etc. that are not approved by moderators and infringe on other RPers' rights. An example would be a mind-reader, an immortal that cannot be defeated, etc. It can also refer to someone who is never hit by any spell in a duel or similar actions.
If you see someone godmoding, ask them politely to revise their post. If you continue having trouble, PM a mod. Godmoding is against OotARP rules, and action will be taken accordingly.
-Powerplaying is a term that is used to describe an RPer who plays another RPer's character without their permission. An example of this would be
Mary hit Gregg with the Imperius Curse.
Instead, Mary should have said,
Mary cast the Imperius Curse, aiming her wand at Gregg.[/i]
This gives Gregg's RPer the chance to dodge the spell or RP getting hit with it.
If you see someone powerplaying, ask them politely to revise their post. If you continue having trouble, PM a mod for help. Powerplaying is against the OotARP rules, and action will be taken accordingly.
-Private, Open, Friends Only are tags to threads.
-For example, a thread might read "Sunset Borderline: Friends Only". "Sunset Borderline" is the title of the thread, but only friends of the character in the thread can post there. So, if your character doesn't know them, do not post.
-"Open" means that anyone can post as long as they obey whatever guidelines the thread starter lays out (post length, etc.).
-"Private" means only those that are invited may post.
Getting a job
When you register your character, you can also choose to have them apply for a job at the same time (or you can later go back and apply as a change to their profile). A list of open jobs can be found here, but those are just recommendations as the most popular and prominent jobs in the wizarding world. You can also choose a different job, open your own shop, etc. That will require more information for the mods such as the purpose of your shop, where it is located, if you foresee needing more employees, the name of your shop, etc. If you create/find another wizarding job you wish to hold, we will need to know what you do, how many other employees might be needed for this job and those relating to it, and any other pertinent information. The only reason we register jobs (like anything else) is so that we don't have 20 million Aurors running around the site. Jobs are awarded on a first come, first served basis. If you are choosing to create a new job on the site or open your shop, you can put the information for said job in your character application.
Registering special abilities
Special abilities will be limited. There were only a few werewolves, vampires, animagi, metamorphamagi, etc. running around. We will allow these abilities to be RPed, but it is on a first come, first serve basis. If we reach a point where we have too many of one thing, we will cut it off. There are specific rules for each of these categories pertaining to the number allowed on this site as well as the limits of their abilities There is ample information what is and isn't allowed, the specifics on certain species on this site, etc. here
Changes to RP characters
Changes to character profiles (especially changes to playby) will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis, and we reserve the right to deny certain changes.
Differentiating between multiple characters
After your character has been approved, you will need to keep the link to their profile handy for RP purposes. We suggest putting it in your signature if you only have a few characters, choosing a color to correspond to each of your characters, and doing it that way. That is the easiest way for those you RP with to have access to your character's profile and know which character you are using easily, especially if you choose to color-code them. Now, you can also choose your display name to correspond with your characters' names on the RP boards. Please note that if you choose an avatar for your characters, they are as follows:
Avatar 1 = Gryffindor crest
Avatar 2 = Slytherin crest
Avatar 3 = Ravenclaw crest
Avatar 4 = Hufflepuff crest
After that, it is RPers that were previously voted RPer of the month. If you are awarded this honor, your avatar for one of your characters will be added to the drop down list of avatars here. You'll be PMed the number for your character.
Creating a plot
Plots can be as detailed or as simple as you'd like. Unless you come up with a plot that only involves characters you have in mind, we ask that you post your ideas here so that anyone can get involved if they wish. Plots for only a few characters need not be approved, but if it will become horribly time-consuming for several RPers, you are using a large number of characters, or it will influence the overall plot of the site, we ask that you seek approval before beginning it. To get approval, just put "Approval Requested" in the title of the thread you begin on that board so that a mod will come back and check it. Approval will not be given for plots retrospectively.
Creating a Group
The wizarding world seemed to be bursting with groups in the books (SPEW, The Order of the Phoenix, The Death Eaters, etc.). If you have an idea for a new group (or wish to start one from the books), you will need approval first as it involves several characters (or has the potential to do so). You will need to PM a mod the following information:
Group's name:
Group's purpose:
Meeting place:
Leader(s):
Minimum number of members:
Plot ideas: (these can be vague as they are just notes you might have in mind)
Interaction ideas for other groups: (these can also be vague and need not have been discussed with the leader(s) of the other groups in question)
Other information you wish to share:
Once approved, your group will be given a thread on the OOC board so that plotting and interaction between RPers can occur. This also allows other RPers to see the group and join if they wish. Duplicate groups will not be approved, so make sure there isn't a group already out there that is too much like the one you seek approval for.
Joining a group
Each group, depending on their leadership, will have differing membership requirements and approval processes. It is best to check their thread on the OOC board for details or PM their leader. Characters should not be in more than 3 groups at once (as they cannot be present in more than 3 threads at a time anyway).
Starting Threads
Any member may start threads on any board, however, we ask that you try to look to see if there is a thread already made on that subject (or one that is too similar) so you don't post a duplicate thread.
It is also important to note that if you begin an RP thread, you can post an OOC disclaimer with your rules for that thread (i.e. posts must be 10 lines or longer", "no looking for love", etc.).
Double-posting
While not allowed elsewhere on the site, you may double-post on RP boards IC. However, this is only allowed if you are posting a different character than the previous post.
Formatting
Often action and dialogue are distinguished only by color, though we do appreciate proper writing form (with quotation marks to distinguish dialogue). An example would be:
Thomas entered the room apprehensively, glancing about him at the dank interior. "Am I late?" he asked.
Some RPers might choose to separate their action and dialogue with space as well. An example follows:
Thomas entered the room apprehensively, glancing about him at the dank interior.
"Am I late?"
OOC messages within RP are always in a shade of yellow, and keep in mind we do not allow OOC only messages. An example of OOC follows:
I have to go to bed.
Smilies
The use of smilies will not be permitted in the RP sections of this site. They may only be used within the general boards. Even in OOC messages on RP boards, they are banned.
OOC Only Messages
We do not allow posts that are only a message to other RPers in OOC. This is considered spam.
Colors
You can differentiate your posts for different characters to benefit other RPers. If you find other colors that can be used on proboards, use the general rule that shades of yellow and orange are OOC colors, whites and light colors are dialogue colors, and everything else that is easily visible is used for action. If you are unsure about your color choice, PM a mod or ask in one of the help threads.

All RP is site-wide RP
Some sites allow RP threads that stand alone where whatever you do in one thread does not effect your character in other threads. That will not be the case here. Anything your character does is final and will affect them in all threads. If they die in one thread, I don't expect to see them in another thread afterwards (unless they were made into a vampire or something or unless the other thread was started before the thread in which they died).
Because other threads affect yours, we expect all our RPers to be informed about the major plots and events going on in the wizarding world. This will be made easy if you begin by reading the backstory thread and check the Daily Prophet thread regularly for updates.
What isn't allowed as far as content?
Content rules for RP are the same as content rules for the rest of the site. Everything within your post (RP, pictures, language, etc.) must be suitable for teen audiences 13 and older--minor violence, curse words that appear in the books, and minor suggestive adult themes are permitted). No sex, no excessive nudity, etc. Note that swear words that are in any way censored are also not permitted (i.e. with the use of * or any other characters. These content rules apply to all posts and PMs on the site as well as any pictures and links posted.
Substantial posts
As a more advanced RP site, we will not allow posts that do not meet our length requirements (10 lines). Posts that are dialogue-only will also not be be permitted. There must be a balance in dialogue and action, though action-only posts may be permitted at times, depending on the situation.
We are not asking for a novel-length post, just posts with substance. A post with substance could be 10 lines or more. Also, it is good to note that some posts that are 35 lines long are not substantial. They might have substance as far as word count, but if there is nothing going on in the post, do not drag it out just to be able to say you were responsible for a long post.
An example of a post that is not substantial would be:
Derrek walked into the room and threw his bag on the floor.
If you have questions, PM a mod or post in a help thread.
RP Infractions
Becoming a mod
We will be opening applications to become a moderator now and then, whenever we feel that we need to add to our staff. If you wish to become a mod, keep an eye out for an opening. Remember that it is a time investment, and you will be asked to watch over at least 3 boards and help out with registration, organization, deletion, plot creation, etc. Seniorit will y be taken into consideration, but it is not necessarily a requirement.
RPer of the Month
Every month nominations will be open for other RPers to put forth the name of another member that they feel has done an exceptional job at post length, quality, activity, contribution, plot creation, and/or other activity. The mods will then consider the nominations and decide the worthiest candidate for the honor of RPer of the month.
Questions about RP
If you have further questions about RP that have not been answered here, check the rules as well as the FAQ. If you do not see an answer, PM a mod or post in the correct help thread (here for questions about the basics of the site, here for plot questions, and here for character and other registration questions).

RP Infractions
- Failing to follow the content rules (substance and T rating alike) will result in a warning for the first three offenses. After that, post will be deleted if the offending party did not start the thread. If they did start the thread, it will be deleted in its entirety. A fifth offense will result in banning them from the site.
- Using unapproved characters, spells, creatures, abilities, jobs, or anything else that requires registration will not be tolerated. The offending RPer will be warned once about not following the proper registration process. Their second offense will result in deletion. A fourth offense will result in banning them from the site. Registration is not needed for absolutely everything you use if it is seen in the canon (or something very similar) however you should consider its impact on others. If you are questioning if new magic needs to be registered, PM a mod.
- After four incidents of spamming/double-posting/unreadable posts on OOC boards (for which the guilty party would receive warnings), a fifth offense will result in banning them from the site.
- Excessive (more than two incidents) or rude behavior will result in banning a member from the site (to clarify, this is OOC rudeness; no RPer will be held responsible for a rude character unless is horribly uncalled for which will be assessed on a case-by-case basis). Since we consider ourselves, as mods, to be fair and consider suggestions, we expect our members to be respectful of us as we are of them.
- Failure to comply with character creation rules (i.e. attempting to get a central canon character approved, not using the correct template/giving all important information, having more than 2 characters deleted for failure to complete their profiles, attempting to gain approval for more than your allotted characters, etc.) will result in the mods denying your approval request. After 2 violations of character creation rules, you will not be able to get new characters approved for 1 month. Another violation will result in the mods not approving new characters for the violator for 5 months.
- Violations of canon (i.e. bringing electronics into Hogwarts, apparating within Hogwarts, apparating underage, etc.) will receive warnings for the first four. After five, you will be banned from RP for 1 month. Six will result in banning from the site.
- Any incident of powerplaying/godmoding will result in a warning for the first offense. The second offense will result in a 1 week ban. The third will result in a month-long ban. The fourth will result in a permanent ban.
- Any combination of violations will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis in which the mods will determine the severity of the infractions.
Becoming a mod
We will be opening applications to become a moderator now and then, whenever we feel that we need to add to our staff. If you wish to become a mod, keep an eye out for an opening.
